Surroundings

Westende belongs to the municipality of Middelkerke and is situated between Ostend and Nieuwpoort. The town is known for its diversity: a beautiful sandy beach, a cheerful promenade and plenty of nice spots. Its hinterland boasting picturesque polder villages is certainly worth a visit as well: Leffinge, Slijpe, Sint-Pieters-Kapelle, etc. In short, it is certainly worthwhile to explore Westende and its surroundings.

The city of Middelkerke

Middelkerke is a vibrant town with a large boulevard where you can go shopping to your heart’s content and explore the gastronomy. If you are feeling lucky you can go to the casino. The former casino building is being rebuilt and is now temporarily housed in Sporthotel, located only 900 metres away from Delmaro. The city also has plenty to offer for culture buffs. During the summer you can stroll through the weekly markets, evening markets and flea markets. You will definitely have a great time in Middelkerke.

Near beach and dunes

The beach and dunes of Westende and Middelkerke are a real tourist attraction. Not only to enjoy the sun or winter charm, but also because they are located close to the Polders area. Situated only a stone's throw away from the sea, Delmaro is the perfect starting point to go for a brisk walk in the dunes or a pleasant bike ride in the beautiful Polder area, to go swimming or to simply enjoy the peace and quiet.

Activities

Throughout the year, plenty of activities and events are organised for people of all ages in and around Middelkerke. You can participate in sports activities, guided excursions, fun events and much more. Come and explore the breathtaking landscape by bike or on foot as the West Coast boasts many wonderful hiking and cycling trails along the coast or across the countryside. Or take the tram and travel along the coastline on the cheap.

For kids there are of course also plenty of things to do in and around Middelkerke. You can visit the Plopsaland theme park, the North Sea Aquarium, the Mercator ship, the petting zoo or an (indoor) playground. Fun guaranteed!

Cultural attractions

If you are looking for a fun day trip, we can certainly give you some tips. Sea lovers can have a unique experience thanks to “I Can Hear It”, a work of art with two large horns producing the unique sound of the sea. To honour its name as a comic book municipality, bronze comic book characters and walls full of comic book paintings can be seen along Middelkerke's seafront. Set out on an adventure together in search of Lucky Luke, Spike and Suzy and many more. Visit the Mercator ship in Ostend or discover Bruges’ cultural heritage…
